Rosario Aninat and Simon Shim-Sutcliffe’s installation River Running Saga channels the stories we accumulate and tell as we simultaneously navigate and narrate both urban and natural worlds.
The in situ sculpture River (Bank) defines and transforms the booth space. As visitors move through the fair, they encounter a slanted structure constructed from the artists’ studio floor—transported here, repurposed and transformed into a massive sloping embankment. Copper pipes perforate this surface, containing water deposits that echo the flow of visitors.
Drawing inspiration from the power transformers and water reservoirs that define the urban landscapes of North and South American cities, the three works Runner (Filter I, II, and III) evoke gothic relics while embodying our continent’s dependence on electricity, water, and power—resources that underpin economies still struggling to move beyond resource extraction. Two oxidized brass sculptures, Runner (Conductor I & II), symbolize the oxidation and power loss inherent to our contemporary urban infrastructure. These works transform power, collect water, and exchange heat, creating an assemblage site of synthetic realism where markers, faucets, and valves reveal the mechanical undercurrents that structure our daily rhythms.
Hand-blown glass mirrors Saga (I-IX) punctuate the space, emerging from the artist duo’s research into Romantic-era Claude glasses—tools that painters and draftspeople once used to reimagine nature during the rapid transformation of industrialization. These hand-blown glasses now serve as aids for seeing backward into future possibilities.
As we drive down the banks of the Rio Mapocho, from the Andes, down to the Pacific, these great alluvial plains. What future do our lifeworlds hold, as our water flows out to sea, and we attempt to channel it up. Gravity alas!
